Medically approved sound wave therapy for the treatment of patients
with spasticity in neurorehabilitation
More and more therapists use novafon with patients with spastic paralysis for tone regulation, pain relief, and promotion of movement. Studies show that targeted vibration therapy can reduce muscle tension and decrease pain perception. novafon can also support treatment as a gentle and practice oriented therapy option for functional neurological disorders.¹

Local vibration therapy
for spastic paresis
The sound wave device for effective treatment to improve mobility.
Spasticity often occurs as a result of neurological conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy, or multiple sclerosis and is associated with painful muscle cramps, restricted mobility, and a high level of suffering. Treatment requires a holistic approach with the aim of relieving pain, promoting mobility, and preventing secondary damage. This is where novafon comes into use. The deep acting sound wave therapy reduces spastically increased muscle tension and supports active therapy for neurological conditions, resulting in improved quality of life in everyday life.² As part of modern neurorehabilitation concepts, novafon can be effectively integrated into daily treatment routines.
Can be integrated into modern therapy concepts
novafon meaningfully complements therapeutic measures for sustainable treatment outcomes. The gentle sound waves relax the muscles and improve mobility without strain on the body.³
Improvement of ADLs
Local vibration therapy relieves tension, reduces pain, and provides greater freedom of movement in functional neurological disorders.⁴
Support for therapy & self use
Whether in the practice or at home, novafon promotes active mobility as an effective complement in neurorehabilitation and thereby effectively supports therapy success.

"For years, novafon has been an important tool in our practice, especially in hand therapy for neurological conditions. We use it to support conventional therapy, for structured practice during self training, and as a complement to device based therapy and robotics."

Step 1
Detonisation of central structures
In the first step, use novafon at 50 Hz to stroke the chest muscles. Stroke from the shoulder toward the sternum to regulate tone. You can use the plate attachment or the plate attachment XL for this. To subsequently activate the posterior shoulder musculature, apply broad strokes to the musculature between the shoulder blades at 75 or 100 Hz. You can ask your patient to actively draw the shoulder blade toward the spine.

Step 2
Detonisation of the flexor group & extensors
In the next step, the biceps and the forearm flexors are detonised. To do this, stroke both areas broadly using the plate attachment. Use the 50 Hz frequency and adjust the intensity to your patient’s perception. This is followed by activation of the triceps and the forearm extensors. Here, use the 100 or 75 Hz frequency and stroke the areas broadly from distal to proximal.

Treatment steps in device based
treatment of spastic paresis
Spastic paresis presents therapists with complex challenges, as it is associated with increased muscle tone, restricted mobility, and pain. The goal of treatment is to regulate muscle tone, improve mobility, and promote patient independence. The following treatment plan provides structured measures for targeted therapeutic support. Application with novafon takes a total of 10 to 15 minutes and can be repeated up to twice daily.
Step 3
Treatment of the hand
On the palm of the hand, you can work with the ball attachment and treat the inner side of the hand. Here as well, follow the same approach by using the 50 Hz frequency on the flexor side and the 100 Hz frequency on the extensor side.

Ergotherapie Köth
Lindenhof, 28.03.2022
"The arm and the hand were completely hypertonic and could not be opened despite heat treatment and targeted massages. With novafon, the arm was treated for approx. 10 minutes and brought into extension with the support of the therapist. […] After regular use, joint protection and mobilisation could be continued and a reduction in tone was achieved."

“After a stroke two years ago, my right side was without sensation. My speech therapist recommended novafon to me. I have only been using it for seven days now, three times a day for 10 minutes, and there has actually already been an improvement. I can highly recommend novafon.”

“[…] The vibrations stimulate both
proprioceptors and mechanoreceptors.

can, through stimulation of various
receptors and activation of afferent
pathways, lead to a reduction of spasticity
and significantly improve the patient’s

Frequently asked questions
- Is the effectiveness of the treatment scientifically proven?
Yes. The first clinical studies investigating the pain reducing effects of local vibration therapy date back to the 1980s. Since then, this form of sound wave therapy has become established as an effective, non pharmacological treatment for acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain. By applying vibration directly to the painful area or to surrounding trigger points, a partially long lasting relieving effect has been demonstrated in a range of chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia, tendinitis, and phantom pain (Staud, 2011, Lundeberg, 1984 to 1987).
- Is the treatment painful?
No. In general, treatment with novafon is very pleasant, and you can slowly increase the intensity. After switching on the device, you will hear a quiet humming sound. As soon as you place the device on the areas of the body to be treated, this humming becomes even quieter and you feel the gentle but effective vibrations on your skin. However, make sure not to treat for longer than 20 minutes at a time and allow your body time to get used to the vibrations.
- Can I make something worse or cause damage with the treatment?
Local vibration therapy with novafon is a simple, safe, and effective treatment method. It is TÜV certified for use by consumers at home. As a medical device manufacturer, it is important to us that you use our device correctly, and we therefore want to inform you about all contraindications and side effects. You can find them here: https://novafon.com/de/kontraindikationen
