Vibrotactile deep stimulation for hand therapy
novafon offers an effective complement to classical treatment in hand therapy. Through targeted, local vibrotactile deep stimulation, sensorimotor processes can be activated, muscular tension regulated, and blood circulation promoted. This has a positive effect on mobility, fine motor skills, and functional integration.¹
Vibrotactile deep stimulation for hand therapy
Through targeted local vibrotactile stimulation, the sensorimotor system is activated and muscular tension is regulated in the fields of orthopedics, neurology, and hand therapy. NOVAFON can help regulate muscle tone, promote perception, and improve movement patterns.
More than a massage device:
Hand therapy with novafon
The hand is one of the most functionally demanding regions of the body in therapy. Even minor limitations have an immediate impact on your patients’ independence. Whether after surgical procedures, in cases of osteoarthritis, CRPS, CTS, or scar tissue, complaints in the hand area require precise and everyday oriented therapeutic approaches. novafon supports you with evidence based local vibration therapy. The gentle, deep acting sound waves promote blood circulation, reduce pain, improve mobility, and facilitate the mobilization of sensitive structures, including in the context of scar treatment or sensorimotor deficits.² Thanks to its simple application, novafon can be flexibly integrated into your existing therapy, both in clinical practice and for accompanying use at home.
Promotion of sensorimotor skills
Vibrotactile stimulation activates the sensorimotor system, which plays a central role in occupational therapy. Studies show that local vibrations can promote perception and contribute to tone regulation.³
Pain therapy for wrist complaints
In hand therapy, novafon is used for osteoarthritis, CRPS, CTS, and other musculoskeletal conditions. The sound waves penetrate up to 9 cm into the tissue and enable the treatment of pain points.⁵
Scar mobilization in hand rehabilitation
Especially in the case of postoperative scars, for example after hand surgical procedures, novafon can improve tissue elasticity and positively influence the healing process, as the vibrations stimulate blood circulation and promote mobility.⁴

Step 1
Hand treatment
For hand treatment, use the plate attachment, select 50 Hz, and set the intensity so that it feels comfortable for you. Work for 2 to 3 minutes on the back of the hand (A to B, B to A). Then repeat the same procedure for 2 to 3 minutes on the palm of the hand.

Step 2
Treatment of pain points
To treat the pain points, switch to the ball attachment and select 100 Hz, then set the intensity to a level that feels comfortable for you. Pain points can occur in very different areas. Often, palpating the wrist and hand helps to identify them, or you may have clearly noticed the pain points during step 1 or 2. A possible localization of the pain points is shown in the illustration. Treat each point for 30 to 60 seconds.

Treatment steps in device assisted
hand treatment
In hand therapy and in the treatment of scars, novafon is used with its various attachments for tone regulation, desensitization, and mobilization. Targeted vibration therapy supports pain relief, improves mobility, and promotes blood circulation, precisely and individually adjustable for each phase of treatment. By combining broad area and point specific application, both acute complaints and chronic limitations can be effectively addressed.
Step 3
Treatment of the hand
In step 3, you now treat the fingers themselves. Select the ball attachment, switch to 100 Hz, and set the intensity to a level that feels comfortable for you. Work slowly between your fingers, along all interdigital spaces (A to B, B to A). If you feel more intense pain in a particular finger, remain there for 20 to 30 seconds and gently glide the ball attachment sideways over the joint several times.

Sven Aufsfeld
Certified hand therapist
“I use the novafon daily in hand therapy, whether for pain reduction, for example in clients with rheumatic conditions, for metabolic stimulation, and [...] in post operative clients to improve sensitivity, for example in cases of polyneuropathy or partial nerve damage. In general, it is also used to loosen or activate the musculature before exercises.”
Occupational therapy
Marienhospital Stuttgart
“The use of the device has proven particularly effective in the field of hand therapy (for example in CRPS, CTS, Dupuytren’s disease, osteoarthritis, nerve lesions, swelling, and pain). Especially in scar treatment after accidents and or surgical procedures, the device is suitable for scar mobilization. The affected area shows improved blood circulation and the tissue becomes more elastic. Patients particularly report the pleasant deep acting effect of the device.”
User E.
2017
“I am very satisfied with the device. It was used in an occupational therapy practice for my finger osteoarthritis, and I find the treatment very pleasant. After the application, the fingers are significantly more mobile.” ³

Frequently asked questions
- What advantages do novafon sound wave devices offer in occupational therapy?
novafon devices are medically approved sound wave devices that can be used without physical effort and independently of location. This allows you to replace several other occupational therapy aids and make your therapy more efficient. In occupational therapy, a novafon can combine the functions of massage devices, manual massage rollers, ultrasound devices, and heat applications. Local vibration therapy restores mobility, reduces pain, and prepares patients for active exercises. In many conditions, several sessions of manual therapy are required before patients can actively participate. Just a few minutes of application with novafon sound wave devices at the beginning of a treatment are sufficient to reduce pain and movement restrictions to a level that allows active exercises. As early as 1984, the superior effectiveness of vibrotactile stimulation compared to aspirin in myofascial and musculoskeletal pain conditions was demonstrated. Patients can therefore significantly reduce the intake of medication alongside therapy.
- How do novafon sound wave devices differ from conventional massage devices for occupational therapy?
novafon is not a simple massage device for occupational therapy, but a therapeutic aid that works with vibrotactile deep stimulation. The effect penetrates up to 9 cm into the tissue. Even with manual therapy and significant physical effort, this cannot be achieved. By stimulating these hard to reach structures, muscle tone is regulated, metabolism is promoted, and oxygen supply to the muscles is improved. Even chronic musculoskeletal pain can be alleviated through local vibration therapy, as studies show. novafon sound wave devices do not work only superficially, but penetrate up to 9 cm deep into the tissue, which cannot be achieved with percussive massage devices. They use vibrotactile deep stimulation that regulates muscle tone, promotes metabolism, and alleviates even chronic musculoskeletal pain, as demonstrated by studies.
- In which specific cases can novafon sound wave devices be used in occupational therapy?
novafon sound wave devices can be used in occupational therapy for a wide range of conditions of both neurological and orthopedic origin. They help improve sensitivity and functionality, support desensitization and resensitization in cases of scar formation, improve mobility, and facilitate activities of daily living.
- How are novafon sound wave devices used in occupational therapy?
novafon sound wave devices are placed on the skin without pressure and vibrate at one of three selectable frequencies. Depending on the indication, different attachments are available for the device. These also determine whether circular or stroking movement patterns are used or whether the device is applied selectively to specific points.
1. Select the appropriate attachment Choose the suitable attachment for the novafon depending on the indication or pain situation. For example, the magnetic attachment for more intensive, point specific treatments, the plate attachment for broader application, or the cone attachment, for example for scar treatment.
2. Set the frequency Set the appropriate frequency on the novafon sound wave device. 50 Hz leads to improved body perception and muscle relaxation. 75 Hz activates the musculature and stimulates the body’s own regenerative processes. 100 Hz is effective for pain relief and promoting circulation.
3. Apply the device Place the device on the skin. It now transmits vibrations vertically into the tissue. Depending on the attachment used or the patient’s perception, you can perform circular or stroking movements or treat specific areas selectively for a longer time.
- Is there clinical evidence for the effectiveness of novafon sound wave devices?
Positive effects of local vibration therapy have been demonstrated in clinical studies. The treatment led to improvements in pain perception and neurological indications such as spasticity. You can find an overview of all clinical studies and publications here.
